October 2026
Starting part way through the month with the hope of better biding to come next week when the east wind blows; for now a few local images also see the shots in the new camera blog
128 on the patch photo challenge list Barnacle Goose and a real chance that these were wild Svalbard birds - they appeared in the murk and rain on the afternoon of 12th calling almost constantly as they came up the estuary and circled Waters Edge before heading back out down the Humber
Pink-footed Geese are still a daily thrill over the garden with roost flights morning and evening producing several 1000 birds - I liked the way this flock mirrored the shape of the cloud edge
This morning was all about the spectacular sky
Putting the birds in context with the local house rooves — the soiund of the flocks is of course so evocative of wild places in a suburban setting
On my second (afternoon) circuit of Waters’ Edge this juvenile Spoonbill came flying in from the east and looked set to land before the attentions of a Black-headed Gull seemed to spook it and it flew off west
129 on the photo challenge list and remarkably my first patch record of the year in spit eof up to 40 birds being regular at the head of the estuary - they are truly tricky to see on my patch as most are fly-bys - not a mess on the image just its last meal!
Also the 119th species i have seen on or from Waters’ Edge this year out of a lowly patch total of 145
