Long-tailed Skua juv 09.07 03286.jpg

Long-tailed Skua Stercorarius longicaudus Shelford, Nottinghamshire, September 2007

A typically obliging dark phase juvenile Long-tailed Skua feeding on invertebrates in a harvested field in Nottinghamshire. Would love to get an opportunity to photograph a pale phase juvenile as they are such striking birds but darker birds are more educational.

All photos taken with the 8MP Canon 1DIIN and the 300 2.8 lens with and without a 1.4x converter. In the olden days I tended to get too close to the subject when it allowed and this even had the result of clipping the wing tips sometimes when this bird flew.
